Sustainability in Ilha Grande
In March 2012, Pace University students traveled from New York City to Ilha Grande, Brazil to learn about sustainability in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. After meeting with Nelson Palma, editor and publisher of O Eco Journal, and learning about the history of the island, they set out to meet local entrepreneurs. In this video, one of the island’s pousada owners explains the steps she takes to make Pousada Aratinga sustainable.

  • It was such an amazing experience to learn about sustainability in Ilha Grande. The island is beautiful and the business owners try very hard to recycle and preserve the environment. It was a life-changing trip and I learned a lot!

  • There was definitely a lot to learn about Ilha Grande and their role in maintaining sustainable businesses through out the island. Every aspect of this trip was an extraordinary learning experience, from the 6 mile hike to Lopes Mendez where we tried a variety of fruits from the forest that most of the locals use in their business, snorkeling with Jason and Gigi, and most importantly going around with our groups interviewing local sustainable businesses that have yet to be apart of our green mapping project. Kristen Justinn and myself had the opportunity to meet with a very driven woman name Rene the owner of “Pousada Aratinga Inn” a very successful sustainable hotel. All that she explained and taught us about was so interesting and inspiring, I was very intrigued to want to help out the environment more myself. I am so grateful to have been able to partake in such an amazing adventure.

If not diving, you can catch me on a trip, or sailing, or participating in any event eco-cultural ... I like to show my friends who would like to try other places when I travel. .. "
